Patchouli is a plant that grows in Indonesia, China and India. During the Middle Ages, its leaves were used by precious cloth traders to protect the fabrics they were importing from insects during long ship voyages into Europe. Its smell was immediately associated with the preciousness of the objects it was protecting. Nowadays, patchouli is one of the most used oils in the world of perfumeries. Its woody and undergrowth smell, with a hint of bitter chocolate is an excellent background ingredient.
